Signs, Symbols & Ciphers, The Reductive Abstraction of Ida Kohlmeyer: Paintings 1968-1969
July 22 – September 15, 2022
Southampton, New York: Jeff Lincoln Art + Design presents "Signs, Symbols & Ciphers, The Reductive Abstraction of Ida Kohlmeyer: Paintings 1968-1969" a comprehensive group of paintings by the renowned abstract expressionist painter Ida Kohlmeyer (1912-1997).
The works, created in a short period in the late 1960's, represent Kohlmeyer's fascination with the power and energy of symbols. Moving away from an earlier period heavily influenced by Mark Rothko, whom she had met and befriended and provided studio space at her home in New Orleans, these paintings represent a concentration on a reductive form of abstraction. The works, from 1968 and 1969, are marked by organic forms contained within strict geometric frameworks and are suggestive of works by Agnes Pelton, Georgia O'Keefe and Hilma af Klint.
Having had a lifelong interest in the cultures of South America, these paintings are unique ruminations on mark-making and the symbols and hieroglyphics of ancient cultures and the power of these symbols to transcend time. They also reflect her early training under Hans Hoffmann in her use of color and form.
Ida Kohlmeyer's work is represented in important museum collections across the country, and she was included in the Denver Museums 2016 groundbreaking show, "Women of Abstract Expressionism". Through September 15th.
